Lace, tapestries and indigo prints from Prague
  • During my summer study abroad in the Czech Republic in 2010, I studied Fibers and Surface Design in the beautiful city of Prague. We learned techniques from local experts in lacemaking, indigo dyeing and tapestry weaving. I incorporated the scenery and the architecture of the Golden City into all of my work there.

  • The indigo dyeing and print-making instructor taught us to carve blocks that we used for printing on fabric. I designed my block for indigo printing based on Czech and Tlingit (Native American) patterns. To create the relief, we used a resistance dye called "pap" before the fabric was dyed several times in indigo.
  • For printing with ink onto fabric, we cut other blocks. For this, I made designed a logo based on the Czech version of my name, Zuzana.
  • My Z design cut in reverse out of foam and adhered to a block.
  • The finished piece of the Z pattern printed in checkerboard fashion on striped fabric.
  • For the tapestry weaving portion of the class, I explored photography of the Prague architecture in this triptych weaving.
  • Depiction of the famous orange roofs of Prague. Woven and embroidered with yarn, embroidery floss, beads, buttons, found objects and strips of one of my watercolor paintings.
  • In-progress close-up of the roof tapestry.
  • Woven image of graphic representations of the left and right images printed with a laser printer on fabric. Adorned with beads and embroidery.
  • Weaving from a photograph I took of a building in Prague. Embroidered and woven with yarn, embroidery floss and beads.
